Sex is a very important component of women’s health. It activates your metabolism and may improve your immune system. Regular sexual intercourse is associated with reduced risk of a heart attack. It may aid the vagina to stay lubricated, elastic, and healthy. And of course, it’s fun. Sometimes, women get lowered libido with aging. Though, it may occur due to many reasons. Generally, when women get older, their ovaries stop making estrogen, the vaginal lining becomes thinner, there’s not as much of vaginal elasticity, muscle tone, and lubrication, and arousal takes little longer. This may result in:

  • A lack of interest in sex (lowered libido)
  • Trouble with lubrication
  • Painful intercourse
  • Inability to reach climax

Some women may get sexual dysfunction that’s connected to social or psychological issues, like stress, anxiety, body image issues, relationship issues, or sometimes, the lack of a partner.

Chronic health issues may also get in the way of having sex. Heart disease may decrease the amount of blood reaching sex organs, causing it difficult to fill the blood vessels in the region of the vagina that are crucial for sufficient lubrication and arousal. High blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and incontinence can all make your sex life difficult. Certain Medicines for a range of conditions may have anti-sex side effects. For instance, some medicines used to treat depression or high blood pressure may decrease interest in sex or cause difficulty attaining orgasm.

So what should you do? Get treatment as many sexual problems can be reversed with suitable therapy. Some therapies are simple, like the use of a lubricant or mild dose vaginal estrogen for dryness and pain. Sometimes the treatment may be more complex, like hormone therapy for lowered libido or sex therapy for inability to climax.

Some lifestyle changes can also make a difference:

  • Proper Exercise may improve your sexual activity by improving blood flow and strengthening your heart.
  • Quit smoking to get better blood flow to the sexual organs and it may also stave off menopause for a few years.
  • Control your weight to get the body image you want.
  • Eat a healthy diet to avoid heart disease and diabetes, and helps you maintain a healthy weight.
